I played around with an AI to render Ter Borch’s painting as 3d. It’s a small thing, but I find it really interesting. I had always perceived the scene as extremely flat, like the characters lined up in Da Vinci’s Last Supper. This rendering shows that they may have been in more layers than I realized. It definitely made me think, and to wonder how many other images of the past — literal and conceptual — are much flatter in my mind than they were in reality.
